Translated by Sabrin Qadah
Ramallah – the member of the Central Committee of the Fatah movement, D. Mohammed Shtayyeh, said that The next step on the road to achieving national reconciliation after the dissolution of the Hamas administrative committee in Gaza, must be the exercise of government powers in Gaza and that the guards of the President take over the administration of the Rafah crossing, stressing that reconciliation is a national necessity and must be successful.
This came during separate meetings with the Dutch and Japanese Consuls, as well as members of the European Parliament, where Shtayyeh briefed them on the latest efforts to complete national reconciliation.
Shtayyeh explained that Egypt will invite the factions to a meeting after the reconciliation government takes responsibility in Gaza, to discuss the outcome of the reconciliation agreement. In the meantime, there will be meetings between the Fatah and Hamas delegations to agree on the outstanding issues.
He stressed that this will be followed by holding a meeting of the National Council before the end of the current year of the National Council, in order to renew the legitimacy of the organization and pump new blood in its institutions.
He added that the efforts to complete reconciliation this time differ from the previous and the chances of success are higher, as the new variables in the region are pushing towards achieving it, since it is not only a Palestinian national interest, but an Egyptian and Arab needs as well.
He said that reconciliation is a key requirement to meet the coming benefits. What the occupation government wants is fighting the idea of a Palestinian state. What we want is unity to strengthen our Arab-backed position on the establishment of a Palestinian state.
