The European Commission Provides $5.4 million to UNRWA

Humanitarian operations Office of the European Commission's offered a donation of five million euros (5.4 million dollars) in support of UNRWA's emergency agency in Syria.

 

"UNRWA" said in a statement on Thursday, that the donation would be allocated for lifesaving cash assistance, which is provided by "UNRWA" for a total of 430,000 Palestinian refugees in Syria. Moreover, the support of humanitarian operations office will enable the Agency to enhance the agency’s degree of readiness and its ability to respond to local and sudden emergencies, which are sensitive things at a time of a great absence of stability throughout the country.


It explained that the conflict, which is approaching its seventh year, led to the displacement of more than 60% of Palestinian refugees registered with UNRWA in the country, where 95% of them were forced to become dependent on humanitarian aid in order to meet their basic food and residence needs.

In expressing her thanks for this generous donation and according to the statement, programmatic Director of the Agency, Laura Sonin, said "The Palestinian refugees are still affected greatly by the protracted crisis in Syria," adding: "We are grateful for the European Commission’s humanitarian operations office support for Palestine refugees, who UNRWA has supported over the six years of conflict with dedication and commitment.”


In turn, the technical assistant to the Office of the humanitarian operations in Syria, Oliver Puechr, said "The goal of the EU president is to help the most vulnerable people affected by the Syrian war." He added, "Over the past few years, the EU has allocated around 18.5 million euros to UNRWA to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians affected by the conflict in Syria. Most of these people are now living displaced within Syria and under severe difficulties."

The humanitarian operations Office of the European Commission's is a firm partner of UNRWA that has generously provided support for the emergency Agency for Palestine refugees from Syria. Since 2012, the Office has donated about 23.9 million euros (32.2 million dollars) for UNRWA's emergency appeal to the Syrian regional crisis.
