Hleileh: Impact of Dollar fall is Limited only to Economy and Citizens
Translated by Sabrin Qadah
The expert in economic affairs, Dr. Samir Hleileh, said that the impact of the falling dollar rate on Palestine in general is linked to the size of consumption and imports from abroad, which supports imports but does not enhance Palestinian exports to any place.
Hleileh pointed in an interview with Mawtini Radio, on Tuesday, that Palestine imports more than it exports; thus any income generated in the dollar can have a higher purchase value, which will enhance the import and consumption more broadly during this period, stressing that it will not affect the Palestinian economy negatively at this stage .
Regarding the impact of the falling dollar prices on the Palestinian citizens, Hleileh explained that most citizens are paid in shekel, which are government workers or Palestinians employees in the occupation territories, which means that one-third of the Palestinian labor force get paid in shekels, in addition to workers and local officials. He also indicated that those who get paid in shekels are able to buy more at the current price, which means that the dollar has now more buying power for imported goods.
He added that the decline in foreign currency has not only limited to the dollar, but included the euro and sterling due to political reasons related to the relationship between Britain and Europe on the one hand, and the extent of economic growth achieved in these countries. That is in addition to its association with the status of the US economy in terms of weakness or level of force.
