United Nations Recognizes Palestinian’s Sovereignty over their Natural Resources
Translated by Sabrin Qadah
United Nations General Assembly adopted, by an overwhelming majority, a draft resolution entitled "Permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources”. This came based on the recommendation of the Second Committee on economic matters and Finance.
The Observer Mission of Palestine to the United Nations said in a statement that 168 countries voted for the resolution, while opposed by seven countries, and 11 countries refrained from the vote. The resolution reaffirms the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including land, water and energy resources and recognizes the right to claim compensation due to the exploitation of natural resources, destruction, loss, depletion or endangering them in any way because of the illegal measures taken by Israel (occupation) power, and Israeli settlers in the occupied Palestinian territory, including Jerusalem East, through the building of settlements and the construction of the wall, which constitutes a serious violation of international law, the advisory opinion of the international Court of Justice and the decisions of the United Nations.
The resolution calls on Israel to refrain from the exploitation of natural resources in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and demands it to stop all environmentally harmful acts, including throwing dumps of all kinds in the Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and to remove all obstacles to the implementation of critical environmental projects, including sewage treatment plants in the Gaza Strip, and projects to rebuild and develop the water infrastructure, including water desalination plant project in the Gaza Strip.
