Communiqué against Israel for Dumping Dangerous Waste near Bethlehem
Translated by Sabrin Qadah
EQA submitted to the General Secretariat, the Secretary ship of the Basel Convention on the Control of Moving dangerous Wastes and Their Disposal, a communiqué according Israel’s violation of the Convention legal proceedings, by transporting dangerous waste to the territory of the State of Palestine in an attempt to get rid of them in the village Za'atara east of Bethlehem.
The EQA stated in a press today, that the communiqué includes the details of detecting two trucks on the eighteenth of last month, one entraining and the other is entrained, carrying Israeli number plates loaded with Israeli waste including 36 barrels of black, yellow and green jelly substances.
The EQA managed to detect them in collaboration with the police and the customs control in Bethlehem after following and monitoring them. Their crews, in collaboration with the Ministries of National Economy and Health, examined some of the waste samples that their results showed they were extremely dangerous, which is contrary to the provisions of the international Basel Convention on the control of dangerous waste and transporting it across borders.
Environment Authority considered that the submission of the communiqué to the Basel Convention is a new victory for the state of Palestine’s party in the Convention which is committed to its provisions, treasuring the role of the Palestinian citizen in being responsible for protecting the environment and reporting on smuggling operations practiced by the Israeli occupation and not to deal with them, calling on citizens to cooperate with its crews in the various provinces, or communicate with them through a mobile number or the free number of customs control 132.
It is noteworthy that the State of Palestine has recorded field and practical victories in returning waste to its resources by forcing "Israel" to return their waste according to the conditions and obligations established in the Basel international agreement. The fact that the Authority of Environment Quality refers to the international law is considered an international victory.
