Decrease in the Consumer Price Index during May 2016
The overall Consumer Price Index (CPI) for Palestine decreased during May 2016 by 0.49% in comparison with April 2016. It decreased by 0.66% in the West Bank, by 0.45% in the Gaza Strip, and by 0.03% in Jerusalem.
The CPI during May 2016 decreased by 0.31% in comparison with May 2015. It decreased by 2.41% in Jerusalem, by 0.77% in the West Bank, and by 0.30% in the Gaza Strip).
The CPI during the first five months of 2016 increased by 0.26% in comparison with the same period in the previous year. It increased by 0.51% in the West Bank, while it decreased by 1.73% in Jerusalem, and by 0.18% in the Gaza Strip.
The change in the CPI in Palestine for May 2016 is traced back to the decrease in the prices of dried vegetables by 24.54%, the prices of fresh vegetables by 9.13%, the prices of fresh fruit by 7.75%, the prices of potatoes and tubers by 4.75%, the prices of oils and fats by 1.06%, the prices of eggs by 0.64%, and the prices of fresh meat by 0.41%.
The decrease in the CPI occurred despite the increase in the prices of fresh fish by 4.94%, the prices of fresh poultry by 1.56%, the prices of liquid fuel for houses by 1.45%, the prices of imported cigarettes by 0.99%, and the prices of liquid fuel for cars by 0.69%.
The CPI across the Palestinian Territories
The CPI in the West Bank decreased by 0.66% during May 2016 in comparison with April 2016. This decrease can be attributed to the drop in the prices of dried vegetables by 25.63%, the prices of fresh vegetables by 10.81%, the prices of tubers by 10.25%, the prices of fresh fruit by 6.67%, the prices of oils and fats by 0.51%. On the other hand, there was an increase in the prices of fresh fish by 5.93%, the prices of eggs by 2.40%, the prices of liquid fuels for houses by 1.62%, the prices of flour by 0.91%, and the prices of liquid fuels for cars by 0.65%.
In Gaza, the CPI also decreased by 0.45% due to the decrease in the prices of dried vegetables by 24.02%, the prices of fresh fruit by 10.01%, the prices of fresh vegetables by 8.15%, the prices of eggs by 4.00%, the prices of oils and fats by 2.53%, and the prices of fresh meat by 2.03%. However, there was an increase in the prices of fresh fish by 5.95%, the prices of tubers by 5.83%, the prices of fresh poultry by 5.03%, the prices of flour by 2.57%, the prices of liquid fuels for houses by 1.62%, the prices of imported cigarettes by 0.94%, and the prices of liquid fuels for cars by 0.65%.
