Increase in the Consumer Price Index during April 2016

The overall Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Palestine during April 2016 increased by 0.28% compared with March 2016 (by 1.35% in Gaza Strip, while it decreased by 0.56% in Jerusalem, and by 0.26% in the West Bank).
The CPI is considered the main index for inflation. It measures changes in the price level of a market basket of consumer goods and services purchased by households.
The PCBS attributed the increase in the CPI in Palestine to the increase in the prices of fresh fruit by 19.38%, the prices of liquid fuel for cars by 4.32%, the prices of fresh vegetables by 3.97%, the prices of liquid fuel for houses by 3.27%, the prices of potatoes and tubers by 1.62%, and the prices of gas by 0.88%. The increase in the CPI occurred despite the decrease in the prices of dried vegetables by 14.24%, the prices of fresh eggs by 9.92%, and the prices of fresh poultry by 8.47%.
Moreover, the CPI during April 2016 decreased by 0.28% compared with April 2015 (by 2.06% in Jerusalem, by 0.80% in the West Bank, and with a slight decrease by 0.01% in the Gaza Strip).
Also, The CPI increased by 0.40% during the first four months of 2016 compared with the same period in the previous year (by 0.83% in the West Bank, while it decreased by 1.55% in Jerusalem, and by 0.15% in the Gaza Strip).
