The General Director of the Jerusalem District Electric Company (JDECO), Hisham Al-Omari, anticipates an increase by 5% in the percentage of electricity consumption by the citizens during the current cold weather.
He told the Palestine Economy Portal that if the cold weather is extremely severe, the consumption percentage will increase by 10-15%, and might even rise by 20%.
The JDECO’s concession rights cover 25% of the West Bank, i.e. about 366 km, including Jerusalem, Ramallah, Bethlehem, and Jericho.
Al-Omari does not expect an electricity outage to occur since the cold weather will hit on Friday and Saturday, during which most governmental, non-governmental, and private organizations do not work, which will decrease the consumption of electricity.
However, he warned that an electricity outage might occur in upcoming incremental weather since Israel has refused from 2012 to provide the Company with electricity supplies. He also added that the Palestinian Energy Authority has been informed about this refusal, but it has not provided any official initiatives to solve this problem.
